Meet Young Artist Gerald, Native of Compton
Since joining the program, with his three younger brothers, Gerald has learned to play multiple instruments—guitar, drums, saxophone, and a bit of piano—and become a part of his school band. One of his fondest memories was receiving his first instrument, a saxophone, through Harmony Project. This moment was the beginning of his musical journey, and the support from our teaching artists has allowed him to explore a wide range of instruments and musical styles.
Gerald’s growth as a musician didn’t stop at playing instruments. He also learned how to read music through Harmony Project, a skill that has opened up even more opportunities for him to express his creativity. Surrounded by friends who are also a part of the program, he’s enjoyed the unique chance to play music alongside them, forming a special bond with his community through shared musical experiences. One of Gerald’s favorite aspects of Harmony Project is how it brings people together, allowing him to create and perform with those close to him.
In addition to instrumentation, Gerald was introduced to music production through our program, where he learned to use GarageBand. This enabled him to create his first song and even produce covers of his favorite tracks. The thrill of creating his own music deepened his love for the art form and inspired him to dream of becoming a professional musician.
Thanks to the nurturing environment of Harmony Project, Gerald's musical abilities and ambitions have grown tremendously, and the program has solidified his desire to pursue a career in both the music and medical fields. Harmony Project not only provided him with instruments and lessons, but also the inspiration, guidance, and community that continue to shape his musical journey.
