Harmony Project - Where Music Builds Opportunities

Hugo Tomas, an alumnus of Harmony Project, is a testament to the power of music education. Growing up in Los Angeles, Hugo faced challenges like bullying. However, Harmony Project provided him with a safe haven, a place to express himself, and a community that nurtured his musical talents.

As a child, Hugo found solace in the trumpet, an instrument that became his voice and also connected him to his Oaxacan culture. Harmony Project provided him with the resources and encouragement he needed to develop his skills and explore his passion. The program's supportive environment refined his dream of becoming a musician and teacher.

Beyond his musical abilities, Harmony Project instilled in Hugo a sense of leadership and community. He took initiative to form a Latin band within the program, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and organizational skills. This experience laid the foundation for his future endeavors, as he now works to promote and preserve the rich traditions of Latin music, in addition to being a working musician.

As a teaching artist in Harmony Project for several years, Hugo gave back to the program that shaped him. He understands the challenges and aspirations of young musicians that come from underserved communities, having walked in their shoes. His experience as both a student and a teaching artist allows him to connect with students on a deeper level, inspiring them to reach their full potential.

Harmony Project's impact on Hugo's life extends far beyond music. The program instilled in him the values of perseverance, creativity, community, and the belief in the limitless possibilities of music. These values have guided him as he continues serving communities throughout Los Angeles.

Hugo's story is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of music education. By providing young people with access to a free quality music instruction, Harmony Project empowers them to overcome challenges, discover their passions, and create a brighter future.
