How Music Built Andy’s Future
Andy Santay, a 2024 graduate now attending the University of California, Santa Barbara, credits Harmony Project with shaping both his musical journey and personal growth. A cellist with over a decade of experience, Andy was first introduced to the program by his mom, who heard about it through others. He joined the Hollywood site at a young age and quickly immersed himself in a supportive, music-driven community.
Through Harmony Project, Andy's musical repertoire expanded as he explored diverse genres and styles, an exciting shift from simply listening to music to actively creating it. Under the guidance of his cello teacher, Chris, Andy felt he had someone he could rely on unconditionally. He also found mentor whom he came to view as a father figure. “He [Chris] was always there to hold my hand throughout the entire way as I was going through HP,” said Andy.
Beyond technical skill, Harmony Project gave Andy tools that extended far beyond music. He developed essential time management skills, gained confidence, and emerged from his shell. Surrounded by peers who shared his cultural background, Andy felt at ease and able to open up, forming meaningful connections with his fellow young artists that he still maintains today.
Currently, Andy is pursuing a music degree and attributes some of his persistence to the strong foundation Harmony Project gave him. “Music is something that I can't exactly leave behind because it's so ingrained with me,” reflected Andy. “Without music I'm not myself anymore.”
