OUR PROGRAMS

Harmony Project offers tuition-free music education to families and schools based upon family income. We require that students remain enrolled in school.

We currently have three community sites:

-Hollywood (at Los Angeles City College)

-Expo Center - South LA (in partnership with the LA Phil and Expo Center) YOLA

-Beyond the Bell Program (based in Koreatown) in partnership with LAUSD

We also offer an adopt-a-school program in select schools.

Each child receives the opportunity to have:

An instrument. As long as students remain in the program, they have an instrument to take home and use as their own. For sized instruments like violin, new instruments are provided as students outgrow smaller models.

Instrumental music lessons. Students are initially enrolled in twice-weekly group classes. They continue in class formations appropriate to their progress, varying in length, frequency, and size.

Performance opportunities. Recitals are held twice each year, at the end of each semester. Additional performances are routinely held at functions for civic groups and other organizations.

Orchestra. Learning to play together is central to Harmony Project's mission. Orchestra builds community.

Choir. Choir develops musicianship and is available to all students.

Juries. Students perform for a panel of teachers each semester, who evaluate the student’s progress and make recommendations for future studies.

Musical outings. With the help of our supporters and community partners, we organize excursions to classical music concerts, including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, USC Symphony Orchestra, YMF Debut Orchestra, and the Hollywood Bowl.

Summer Music Festival. Harmony Project's summer programming includes special enriching experiences such as a teacher recital, guest presenters, and the Summer Orchestra, which presents a full concert at the end of the summer session.

The program operates on a semester system, with 16-week sessions in the Fall and Spring. The summer consists of an 8-week session that includes the Summer Music Festival.

Students receive a minimum of 40 hours and up to 200 hours or more of supervised activity each year. This reflects instructional time equivalent to one additional school day per week. This activity is then multiplied by many hours of practice and meaningful family time.
