HOLLYWOOD / LACC

Instruction is currently offered in Violin, Viola, Cello, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet, Trombone, Piano and Voice. Group instrumental instruction takes place in classes of between 6-12 students, either once or twice a week.
In addition, some students currently receive weekly private lessons, with a requirement to "give back" to the program in some way.

The e are a total of 282 students enrolled, with 25 teachers and three orchestra conductors.

The Community Program functions on a 40-week calendar:
Fall Session: 16 weeks (September to December)
Spring Session: 16 weeks (Mid-January to May)
Summer Festival: 8 weeks (June and July)

At the end of the Fall and Spring sessions, each group instrumental class performs in recital. In addition, all students receiving private lessons are expected to perform a solo piece as well.

There are several large performance ensembles available to the students at the Hollywood/LACC program. Each rehearses for three hours a week and performs in concert at the end of each fall, spring and summer sessions.

New students are required to complete a 16-week Musicianship Course before choosing an instrument and beginning their instrumental instruction. In this course, students learn basic music skills and the elements of an orchestra, receive ear and listening training, and gain an understanding of the commitment required of the Harmony Project.

The 85-piece Harmony Project Orchestra is a beginner-intermediate orchestra which focuses on basic musicianship, simple orchestral repertoire, developing ensemble skills, and learning to work with a conductor. This ensemble is composed entirely of students in group classes or private lessons sponsored by the Harmony Project.

The 50-piece Hollywood Youth Orchestra plays advanced and varied orchestral repertoire, and its members are expected to achieve and maintain high standards of musicianship. Although 90% of the participants in the Hollywood Youth Orchestra are Harmony Project students, membership is open to all students in the Hollywood area, regardless of whether or not they participate in The Harmony Project classes. Participation in this ensemble is by audition only.

The 35-member Harmony Project Choir focuses on basic musicianship, ear training, music reading and performance etiquette and eventually moves to more advanced harmony and 2-,3-, and 4-part singing. Students enrolled in instrumental classes are encouraged to also participate in the choir as a complement to their musical studies.

The 10-member Harmony Project Choir was recently formed as a performance outlet for Harmony Project's advanced vocal students. The choir performs a varied repertoire with advanced harmonies and 4-part writing.
